Alfred Eames Cellars’ Carmena Receives Best In Show Recognition at 2023 Colorado Uncorked

The Colorado Wine Industry Development Board (CWIDB), part of the Colorado Department of Agriculture, proudly announced the winner of the 2023 Best in Show award on Friday evening at Colorado Uncorked. Of the 12 wines selected to comprise the 2023 Governor’s Cup Collection, Alfred Eames Cellars received the Best in Show award for its 2019 Carmena. Alfred Eames Cellars is located at Puesta del Sol Vineyards three miles south of Paonia, Colorado in the West Elks AVA. Their wines are available at many retail wine shops, tasting rooms and liquor stores throughout Colorado.

New Backyard Avian Influenza Case Confirmed in Colorado

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) confirmed a new case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a backyard flock in Weld County, Colorado. The flock experienced a high mortality event, losing 20 of 24 chickens in the flock, after exposure to sick and dying wild geese on the premises. The remaining birds in the flock were euthanized.

Today, children across the state celebrated Colorado Proud School Meal Day. Hosted annually by the Colorado Departments of Agriculture and of Education, this day celebrates Colorado agriculture and educates K-12 school kids about healthy eating – and about where their food comes from.

Grants Available for Projects Showcasing Agrivoltaics in Colorado

To help demonstrate one of the many ways agriculture can contribute to addressing the effects of climate change, Colorado is investing $500,000 in projects that help advance the use of agrivoltaics in the state. 

Agrivoltaics is the practice of co-locating solar energy installations and agriculture, with crops or grazing land beneath or between rows of photovoltaic panels. Now, farmers, ranchers, and other landowners with innovative ideas on how to use agrivoltaics in Colorado will have a chance to apply for funding for their projects.

Perhaps the most well known potatoes come from the San Luis Valley, which is home to many potato farming families who grow more than 70 varieties of potatoes. With plenty of sunshine and higher elevations, the valley’s mild growing conditions are ideal for potatoes. They even celebrate the potato with its very own festival!
