Last week, the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act (PACFA) program partnered with Weld County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control to remove 95 dogs from a residence in Weld County. In line with PACFA’s statutory authority, CDA has issued a cease and desist order to the animal owners in this case for operating an animal shelter or sanctuary at their residence without a valid license.
Upon relinquishment, Larimer Humane Society transported 35 dogs to their shelter, and the Colorado Humane Society / Dumb Friends League transported 60 dogs to the metro area for disbursement to the following shelters: Foothills Animal Shelter, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) and MaxFund Animal Shelter. After intake and examination by the shelters, many of these dogs should be available for adoption soon.
“CDA would like to recognize the efforts of the Colorado Humane Society and Larimer Humane Society, who offered assistance with the capture and transport of the dogs for release to the shelters across the Front Range,” said Nick Fisher, PACFA Program Section Chief. “Colorado shelters are known for their collaborative efforts and the department would like to extend our gratitude to those shelters that stepped up to assist in this case by taking in these dogs even though their shelters are already overcrowded.”
The owners cooperated with the agencies and agreed to surrender the dogs. All dogs relinquished were small chiweenie/terrier mix dogs. The relinquishment operation took place on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. The case is under investigation by the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

Casi 100 perros entregados en un caso de acaparamiento de animales en el condado de Weld
La semana pasada, el Programa de la Ley de Instalaciones y Cuidado de Animales de Compañía (PACFA), del Departamento de Agricultura de Colorado (CDA), se asoció con la Unidad de Control Animal de la Oficina del Sheriff del condado de Weld para retirar a 95 perros de una residencia en dicho condado. Los propietarios de los perros cooperaron con las agencias y accedieron a entregarlos. Todos los perros entregados eran perros pequeños de una mezcla entre chiweenie y terrier. La operación de rescate se dio el martes 18 de abril de 2023. El caso está siendo investigado por la Oficina de Sheriff del condado de Weld.
