Rocky Mountain National Park Agriculture Subcommittee

The Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Agriculture Subcommittee seeks to reduce ammonia emissions from agricultural sources. It was formed in October 2006 to bring agriculture’s voice to discussions on nitrogen deposition issues facing the park.

The subcommittee collaborates with the National Park Service, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to review air quality monitoring and ammonia inventory data, to review the latest science and research, to educate and reach out to livestock and crop producers, and to provide recommendations on cost-effective and practicable ammonia reduction strategies for Colorado’s agricultural producers.

Below, you can find Ag Subcommittee meeting materials, technical resources, workgroup documents, and general reference information relating to the broader RMNP Initiative.

Rocky Mountain National Park Early Warning System

The goal of the early warning system is to inform agricultural producers of impending weather conditions that are likely to transport nitrogen from eastern Colorado into RMNP. These warnings will allow producers to strategically implement best management practices that reduce nitrogen emissions but are not feasible for year-round implementation.

When an upslope event is predicted, a warning is issued to agricultural producers participating in the program. Visit the Rocky Mountain National Park Early Warning System website to learn more.
