All bison (regardless of age or sex) for exhibition, show, rodeo, or recreational events need to be individually identified with official ID ear tags and the official ear tag number needs to be listed on the certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI).

TB Free Zone
Bison Steers/Spayed Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30days prior to entry into Colorado unless shipping directly from the ranch of origin to a licensed livestock market or to a federally inspected slaughter establishment.
- Bison steers and spayed heifers do not need Official ID.
Bison Cows/Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30days prior to entry into Colorado unless shipping directly from the ranch of origin to a licensed livestock market or to a federally inspected slaughter establishment.
- Permit required for Non-OCV (Official Calfhood Vaccinate) bison cows/heifers prior to entry by calling (303) 869-9130 or using the Online Permitting System (OPS), unless shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter establishment or a Colorado Approved Feedlot.
- Official ID ear-tag for all bison cows/heifers 18 months of age or older. This should be one of:
- 15-digit Animal Identification Number: 840-series ear-tag (visual tag, RFID tag, or combination of the two).*900-series tags may only be used as Official ID if they were applied to the ear on or before March 11, 2015
- Silver "brite" metal ear-tag with state of origin two-digit code (NUES tag).
- An orange Brucellosis (OCV) ear tag.
- Official ID must be individually listed on the CVI for each bison cow/heifer 18 months of age or older.
- Official ID Exemption:
- Bison cows/heifers being imported into a Colorado Approved Feedlot
- Bison cows/heifers shipped directly to slaughter and processed within 3 days may move on an approved Livestock Market Backtag
Bison Bulls

- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30days prior to entry into Colorado unless shipping directly from the ranch of origin to a licensed livestock market or shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter establishment.
- Negative Tuberculosis Test required for bison steers and spayed heifers 6 months of age or older within 60 days prior to entry into Colorado unless they are being imported into a Colorado Approved Feedlot, or originate from a TB accredited herd with the TBaccredited herd number indicated on the CVI, or originate from a TB qualified herd with the date of the last whole herd TB test indicated on the CVI.
- Official ID ear-tag for all bison steers and spayed heifers of any age. This should be one of the following:
- 15-digit Animal Identification Number: 840-series ear-tag (visual tag, RFID tag, or combination of the two).*900-series tags may only be used as Official ID if they were applied to the ear on or before March 11, 2015
- Silver "brite" metal ear-tag with state of origin two-digit code (NUES tag).
