Reportable Diseases

The Colorado State Veterinarian's Office is responsible for maintaining the health and integrity of the Colorado livestock herd to provide a safe product for the public.

 

NOTICE: The Animal Health Division is currently working on revising the Reportable Disease list in Colorado.  These revisions should be completed by Fall 2024.  Please contact our office at (303) 869-9130 if you have any questions.

 

Reportable Diseases in Colorado

What to Report:

  • Any suspected clinical case of a reportable disease, which includes:
    • If an animal dies acutely and was exhibiting clinical signs of a reportable disease, this must be reported even if no diagnostic testing was completed prior to death.
    • Any highly unusual condition, unusual clinical signs of any kind, and any instance of very high morbiditiy and/or mortality.  This includes all foreign animal diseases***, or infectious disease or parasite of livestock which was not previously known to exist in Colorado.
    • All cases of acute equine neurologic disease must be reported immediately, unless cause is known trauma or toxicity.
    • Part 12 of the Colorado Livestock Disease Control Rule identifies what information needs to be provided when reporting diseases.  Rule is listed here

When to Report:

  • All reportable diseases must be reported immediately to the State Veterinarian's Office upon suspicion of clinical disease.  Do not wait for test results to report!
  • The State Veterinarian's Office can provide guidance to veterinarians on testing, appropriate biosecurity, and additional requirements, as needed.

How to Report:

  • Call the State Veterinarian's Office at (303) 869-9130.  If after hours, the voice message will indicate which staff veterinarian is on call.
  • Call the area Veterinary Medical Officer for your county
