The Colorado Department of Agriculture’s new Division of Animal Welfare is seeking input from people with expertise on horse, donkey and mule welfare to help shape the new Equine Welfare Assistance Grant program. Stakeholders can provide comments by taking a brief survey to help inform how to develop the grant program, which will award a total of $200,000 to projects that promote the well-being of Colorado’s domestic equines. The survey closes on September 18.
Stakeholder feedback will guide the development of this grant, which will begin accepting applications later this fall. Stakeholder comments will help the Division to identify the challenges and opportunities the grant funding can significantly impact, develop clear grant eligibility requirements and application instructions, and create transparent and effective evaluation criteria.
“Community engagement is a key priority for the Division of Animal Welfare and this grant provides a terrific opportunity for CDA to collaborate with industry and non-profit experts to support Colorado horses in need,” said Joe Stafford, Director of the Division of Animal Welfare. “We want to hear from people who care about the well-being of horses in Colorado so that we can make the greatest impact with the available funding.”
This grant opportunity will be focused on projects that fall into these broad categories:
- Education and outreach
- Emergency care and veterinary services
- Shelter support
Anyone can find the survey on CDA’s website at ag.colorado.gov/equinewelfare. The information collected in the survey will help identify critical issues facing Colorado horses and shape the grant to have the greatest impact in advancing equine welfare.
The Equine Welfare Assistance Grant program is funded through HB24-1458 as part of the creation of the new Division of Animal Welfare. The fund has $200,000 for this current state fiscal year, with additional funding through state fiscal year 2026-27. The applications for the grant program will be available this fall. All projects will need to spend all of the funding by June 30, 2025, the end of the state’s fiscal year.
