Feeder/Slaughter Dairy Cattle

HPAI UPDATE:  

CDA Emergency Rule effective April 30, 2024

Lactating dairy cattle imported into Colorado must have a negative test for Influenza A within 7 days prior to movement.  The lactation status and negative test results must be recorded on the CVI.

Steers and Spayed Heifers

  1. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
    1. UNLESS shipping directly from the ranch of origin to an approved livestock market or shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility.
    2. Official Identification does not need to be individually listed on the CVI for steers and spayed heifers, UNLESS they are used for rodeo or exhibition.
  2. Permit is required prior to entry by calling (303) 869-9130 or by using the Online Permitting System (OPS)
    1. Permit exemptions:
      1. eCVIs created through VSPS, GlobalVetLink (GVL), VetSentry, Vet-CVI, or myVetTech that submit a CVI directly to Colorado less than 24 hours after endorsement do not require a permit. 
  3. USDA Official Identification required (840 RFID tags, Silver “brite” tags, or orange Brucellosis (OCV) ear tags)
    1. Official Identification Exemption:
      1. Dairy steers and spayed heifers being imported into an Approved Tagging Site.
      2. Dairy steers and spayed heifers shipped directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility and processed within three days of arrival.

Bulls, Cows, and Heifers

  1. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
    1. UNLESS shipping directly from the ranch of origin to an approved livestock market or shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility.
    2. Official Identification must be individually listed on the CVI.

 

  1. Permit is required prior to entry by calling (303) 869-9130 or by using the Online Permitting System (OPS)
    1. Permit exemptions:

  3. A Negative Tuberculosis Test required for dairy cattle 6 months of age or older within 60 days prior to entry into Colorado.
    1. TB test exemption:
      1. Consigned to an approved livestock market: 
        1. Must be tested prior to release; 
        2. Sold directly to slaughter; or
        3. Sold to an approved feedlot 
      2. Consigned directly to slaughter; or
      3. Consigned to an Approved Feedlot.
  4. Negative Official Trichomonas foetus PCR Test (individual or pooled) required for bulls 12 months of age or older within 60 days prior to entry into Colorado: 
    1. A negative trichomoniasis test is valid for 60 days after collection if the bull is held separate from females.
    2. Bulls from a known trich positive herd are not permitted to enter Colorado regardless of test status.
    3. Bulls consigned to a livestock auction market must be tested within 60 days prior to the sale if being sold for breeding purposes 
      1. Bulls not tested prior to sale must:
        1. Be tested prior to release from the market;
        2. Be sold directly to slaughter; or 
        3. Be sold to an Approved Feedlot.
    4. Trichomonas foetus Test exemptions:
      1. Bulls used for exhibition (without sale) that have no sexual contact with females; 
      2. Bulls consigned directly to slaughter; or 
      3. Bulls consigned to an Approved Feedlot.
