Feeder/Slaughter Bison- Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming
For feeder/slaughter bison originating from the Designated Surveillance Area (DSA), please see the DSA requirements below.
Bison Steers and Spayed Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
- UNLESS shipping directly from the ranch of origin to an approved livestock market or shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility.
- A statement written on the CVI stating: “These bison do not originate from the DSA.”
- USDA Official Identification (840 RFID tags, Silver “brite” tags (placed prior to 11/05/2024), or orange Brucellosis (OCV) metal ear tags (placed prior to 11/05/2024)).
- Not required for steers and spayed heifers UNLESS traveling for show or exhibition.
- Required for all steers and spayed heifers traveling for show or exhibition regardless of age.
Bison Bulls, Cows, and Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
- UNLESS shipping directly from the ranch of origin to an approved livestock market or shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility.
- Official Identification must be individually listed if required in paragraph 2.
- A statement written on the CVI stating: “These bison do not originate from the DSA.”
- USDA Official Identification required (840 RFID tags, Silver “brite” tags (placed prior to 11/05/2024), or orange Brucellosis (OCV) metal ear tags (placed prior to 11/05/2024)).
- All bison 18 months of age or older.
- All show or exhibition bison regardless of age.
- Exemption:
- Bison being imported into an Approved Tagging Site.
- Bison shipped directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility and processed within three days of arrival.
Feeder/Slaughter Bison - Designated Surveillance Area (DSA)
Steers and Spayed Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
- Official Identification does not need to be individually listed on the CVI for steers and spayed heifers, UNLESS they are used for rodeo or exhibition.
- A statement written on the CVI: “These bison have met the export requirements to move out of the DSA.”
- Permit is required prior to entry by calling (303) 869-9130.
- USDA Official Identification (840 RFID tags, Silver “brite” tags (placed prior to 11/05/2024), or orange Brucellosis (OCV) metal ear tags (placed prior to 11/05/2024)).
- Not required for steers and spayed heifers UNLESS traveling for show or exhibition.

- Bison must meet the state of origin’s DSA export requirements.
