UPDATE 11/20/2025 Equine Herpes Virus Outbreak: Due to the multi-state equine herpes outbreak associated with barrel racing and rodeo-type events in Texas and Oklahoma, all equine CVIs will require the following statement: “The equine listed on this CVI have not originated from a premises currently quarantined for EHV-1, have not been exposed to EHV-1, and have not attended an event where EHV-1 has been confirmed”


  1. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)* issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry.
    1. Official Identification must be listed individually on the CVI.  
    2. Global Vet Link’s extended equine certificate of veterinary inspection (eeCVI) program may be used in lieu of a CVI.  These extended certificates must meet the following requirements:
      1. The eeCVI must be completed by an accredited veterinarian and is valid for six months from the date of inspection.
      2. The eeCVI must have a negative EIA test valid for the duration of the six- month eeCVI.  
      3. The trip permits must be completely and accurately filled out and submitted prior to movement by the owner for each movement.                                                                                                                            
  2. No permit required for equine import.
  3. Negative EIA Test required within 12 months prior to entry.
    1. The name of the laboratory, results, date of the test, and the accession number must be listed on the CVI. Blood samples for EIA testing must be collected by an accredited veterinarian. 
    2. Foals under 6 months and accompanied by their EIA-negative dam do not need an EIA test.
      1. If the dam does not accompany the foal, then the foal must test negative for EIA prior to entry into Colorado.

 

  1. Specific events/exhibitions/rodeos/stables may have additional requirements.

 

*Please note, if a street address is not available, a physical address must include one of the following: GPS coordinates, intersection, trailhead name, campground name, or game management unit.  

 

 

Equine coming from a CEM-affected region:

5. All of the above requirements AND:

  1. Equine must meet USDA requirements at the port of entry before importation to Colorado.
  2. Equine coming from a contagious equine metritis region (CEM-affected region), or from a country that trades horses freely with a CEM-affected region, may only be imported into the approved CEM-quarantine facility in Colorado.
  3. Colorado will not accept stallions from CEM-affected countries or from countries that trade horses freely with a CEM-affected region.
  4. Equines (from a CEM-affected region) may only be imported into Colorado after receiving a movement permit and approval by the State Veterinarian’s Office.
