Breeding Yak- Non-controlled areas
Bulls, Cows, and Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
- UNLESS shipping directly from the ranch of origin to an approved livestock market or shipping directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility.
- Official Identification must be individually listed if required in paragraph 2.
- If yak are from Wyoming, Idaho, or Montana outside the DSA: A statement written on the CVI stating: “These yak do not originate from the DSA.”
- If yak are from Michigan outside of the MAZ: A statement written on the CVI stating: “These yak do not originate from the MAZ.”
- USDA Official Identification required (840 RFID tags, Silver “brite” tags, or orange Brucellosis (OCV) metal ear tags).
- All Yaks 18 months of age or older.
- All show or exhibition Yak regardless of age.
Breeding Yak- Designated Surveillance Area (DSA)
Bulls, Cows, and Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
- Official Identification must be individually listed on the CVI.
- A statement written on the CVI: “These Yak have met the export requirements to move out of the DSA.”
- Permit is required prior to entry by calling (303) 869-9130 or by using the Online Permitting System (OPS).
- USDA Official Identification required (840 RFID tags, Silver “brite” tags, or orange Brucellosis (OCV) metal ear tags).
Yak must meet the state of origin’s DSA export requirements.
Breeding Yak- Michigan TB Modified Accredited Zone (MAZ)

Michigan Counties Affected: Montmorency, Alpena, Alcona, Oscoda.
Bulls, Cows, and Heifers
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
- Official Identification must be individually listed on the CVI.
- A statement written on the CVI: “These yak have met the export requirements to move out of the MAZ.”
- Permit is required prior to entry by calling (303) 869-9130 or by using the Online Permitting System (OPS).
- USDA Official Identification required (840 RFID tags)
- Negative Tuberculosis Test required for yaks 6 months of age or older within 60 days prior to entry into Colorado and must originate from a TB accredited free herd.
- Accredited herd number and date of the last whole herd test must be indicated on the CVI.
- Exemption - no TB test is required if moving directly to a federally inspected slaughter facility.
